My Journey with CFS

Nutrition. Love. Healing.

Powered by Blogger.
Having researched M.E/Chronic Fatigue for years, visited numerous specialists, talked to so many fellow sufferers I am of the same opinion as many others.

Recovery is a three point triangle -
1. Nutrition - what we put into our bodies
2. Mind - the way we think about our illness & our attitudes
3. Body - mechanics of the body

I will blog about each one of these in the hope of putting the knowledge I have learnt to good use.

Nutrition

Someone asked me recently, "Do you think your diet has had any effect on your recovery?"
I immediately said "Absolutely yes its a huge part".

I didn't realise the huge influence nutrition played in our health until about 5 years ago. My physiotherapist, like I has suffered with very severe Chronic Fatigue for multiple years, she told me about her recovery & educated me on food. Over the years I have researched it for myself. Most people know I am now studying nutrition at the 'College of Naturopathic Medicine' in Manchester & hope to become a 'Nutritional Therapist' who specialises with M.E/CFS clients. I am so confident that nutrition plays such a vital role in our recovery that I plan to make a career from it!

There is endless possibilities for an M.E patient, I could never write it all on a blog & it is so specific to each person. No two people will ever take the same path to recovery because we are all so different. I see it as a jigsaw puzzle of seeing what works for us.
Here is a very rough guide to nutrition and I really hope it encourages some of you to think about it and maybe research it further.

Growing up I had your typical Western diet. When I was having a particularly bad day, I drank Lucozade for energy & tried to cheer myself up by eating chocolate & my favourite foods. I loved those sherbet sticks (basically colourful sugar)! I loved white bread & lots of it. I never once thought about food. It's just food, who gives it a second thought?

We need to learn to think of food as fuel, thats exactly what is it. How can we expect our engines (bodies) to run well if we fill it with bad fuel (food).
I spent years reading nutrition books before I decided to study it. There is so much to learn its literally endless.

The way I see it, I try to help my little body as much as I can, in order for it to help me. Even though we may not always feel it, our bodies are incredibly resilient & are working to keep us alive and well 24/7.
My poor hopeless M.E body was having alot of difficulties and obviously struggling so I started putting in good nutritious food to help my cells which build the energy (in simple terms, or research mitochondria cells). I cut back on the poisons I was putting in, endless cups of tea, processed foods, foods with an huge list of additives, alcohol.
I swapped them gradually for natural foods, a diet abundant in fresh fruit & vegetables, the more varied the better. My family tease me when a snack is a carrot stick, why is it weird to munch on a carrot? It's packed full of the good stuff to help my body! Much more than a chocolate biscuit, not only is it bad for my waist line & not helping my body, these rubbish foods are in fact harming our fragile bodies.

Some simple changes: -
  • Swap white bread for wholegrain/wholewheat brown bread
  • Try to have protein with each meal, it helps us to balance our energy levels eg. some form of meat, nuts, eggs
  • Drink 8+ glasses of water per day - everyone says this & it is very boring but it helps us massively to flush out the toxins. Filtered/bottled water is perfect in an ideal world. Tap water is fine.

  • Eat lots of fruit & vegetables.
  • Experiment with new/different foods...
  • Start reading the ingredients on your food. You will be amazed. I looked & didn't even know what half of them were! We should be worried if we don't know what we are eating. Eg. Turkey in a packet is packed full of additives to keep it fresh, i just go over to the deli part instead & ask for slices of actual turkey which I can see has been cooked that day. No additives. Just turkey. Simple.
  • Think about where your food has come from. Eg. Jelly sweets, what exactly is that? How can it be classed as food? Theres nothing nutritious in them at all.

An M.E/CFS body doesn't typically like, alcohol, caffeine (tea & coffee), sugar. These all cause havoc with our energy levels because they all cause a spike in blood sugar & energy levels only for us to then fall and crash. Most people dont even notice, I used to drink gallons of cups of tea with milk & never noticed. Again it is just causing our bodies to work extra hard to balance our energy levels, when its already trying to work so hard to make us well. Maybe substitute them for herbal teas, its tough going at first, even cut back one cup a day at first. I love herbal white tea, green tea & nettle tea. They can be quite an acquired taste but persevere they have so many benefits!

Wheatgrass juice shots - full of B vitamins needed to make energy

Begin the day with hot water, half lemon squeezed & root ginger - full of antioxidants & good for digestion

Some simple nutritious meal ideas:

Salmon w/ salad leaves, celery & cucumber              Stir-fry chicken & veg.

I love to make easy juices, I bought a 'Breville' juicer cheap from eBay. Juices are packed full of our essential vitamins & minerals.
Organic orange & carrot juice is my absolute favourite.

A few days of my average food intake from Waitrose

To eat organic is obviously the best thing if you want to go that far, because we aren't adding the pesticides and herbicides which they put on un-organic foods into our bodies. They are just toxic to our bodies and then our bodies have to work harder to detox them.

My lecturer once said "Any food that doesn't nourish you is a waste of money and time". This really stuck with me. Don't get me wrong I love Cadburys & the occasional treat but day in day out is a no-no, it is actually inhibiting our recovery and doing our bodies alot of harm.

We will all be on different journies. My diet is far from what is needs to be but I am still learning & it is tough going sometimes when everyone around you eats differently.
I do urge you to think about what you have read & if you are well enough to research nutrition further, I promise you won't regret it.

Few of my favourites - if you can't afford to buy them, reserve them at the local library - thats what I do :)

This book is amazing & useful I invested in it!

Things are still very much on the up and I am so happy. I feel so much at peace & finally so calm about everything. Last year when I was so poorly, we didn't know what to do, I thought we had lost a well fought battle and there didn't seem to be any answers. I prayed about it & asked others too aswell. I needed guidance. As a family we did alot of research & networking, my parents went to a Lyme Disease conference in Dublin (still have a unconfirmed diagnosis of lyme) & they found 'The Cowden Protocol' with NutraMedix. I started in July 2012 & it is a miracle in my life. It has changed my life and I am so grateful.

  • I am getting amazing grades on my course which I am so happy and proud of.
  • Started to do some volunteer work at church, working with the kids and courses. I've learnt I can be relied upon to turn up every week & not let them down because I am too ill & I am loving it.
  • I'm so much more independant & confident.
  • I am finally thinking about the future and I'm excited to see what that holds - holidays, adventure planning, career etc.
  • Bible study & continuing to grow as a Christian brings me so much comfort & hope in this illness. I have made some great friends through the church who are a power of strength for me.
  • We have just returned from one week in Puerto Banus in Marbella. I absolutly loved it, to just get away in the sun for abit. It was a gorgeous villa, we just relaxed, tanned, drank, ate & bumped into the cast from 'The Only Way is Essex' everywhere.
  • I applied for an actual job last week which is a huge deal for me! I am praying so much that I get an interview. I would love to be able to work one day a week to begin with. I crave having a job of my very own which is mine & I can be independant.
  • I can actually make solid plans! I never used to be able to commit to anything in fear of being ill that day. I have plans to go to London soon to see two of my best friends who moved down there.
  • My Cockapoos are still a massive part of my rehabilitation, being able to go out with them & take responsibility is so fulfilling. Most people know much those two doggies mean to me. Everyone who is ever ill needs to get a Cockapoo!

Our pool backing onto a golf course - wish I could live there

I know people say "How is it hard work to get better?" I'm thinking are they kidding me.
It takes serious will power & strength to get better from this illness. You need strong people surrounding you who have faith that you will recover & want to help you.

You need to be constantly telling yourself you can do it, eating the right foods, knowing when to push yourself but also knowing when to rest, learning to listen & trust your body, knowing what could set you back, being strong emotionally knowing stress can hit you backwards, being in the right calming environment, yoga/meditation... I could honestly go on forever on things I have to do daily to make sure I stay on the right track. Yeah some days it feels very tedious and I get fed up, but when I hit my goals it's an amazing feeling. Every week I literally achieve something I couldn't do the previous week.

I am writing up some blog posts about the 3 things I feel have the most beneficial aspects we can work on -
 1. Nutrition
2. Mind
3. Body

I have a very clear of view of the goals I want to achieve & I am incredibly motivated & determined they are all going to happen.
I know I am not your typical 22 year old but I have worked incredibly hard to be where I am today. Sometimes I do worry too much about what people expect from me, but I'm different & there are complications to overcome before I can catch up with everyone else.

I know I am incredibly blessed but please do not loose hope, this proves that we can fight this illness with the correct mix of things.
Seven months ago I was bed bound, I'd completely lost all hope & was incredibly close to giving up. It took me years to find the right jigsaw puzzle pieces but now the pieces are all fitting together & it is paying off :)

Lots of love

This is going to be such a positive blog post.

Small collage of recent pictures - Cockapoos, juicing, wheatgrass shots, cakes, revision, lectures, walks

I still have rest days in bed with Made In Chelsea, Friends, The Hills, Towie or The Kardashians - all my guilty pleasures in life

I want to be a Candy Kitten - Probably have to watch Made In Chelsea to understand.

Fudge & I on Sunday before church. Lovely sunny day.

Another order of The Cowden Protocol from Nutramedix - www.nutramedix.com

I am so happy at the moment, things have really turned a corner, I am really progressing and its all thanks to this new herbal treatment protocol I began July 2012. We think it has finally gotten into my system and is making a difference. So many people tell me "You look so much better", I have FINALLY put weight on which most girls would freak out at but it shows my body is healing and absorbing my food. I am sleeping better, have more energy to do things, I feel my head is in a much better place, I just try to be as positive as I can be. I still have bad days and mostly need to rest but I am so excited to see these improvements.

  1. I passed my year 1 Nutrition exam & first assignment in March - I just have 2 more assignments, 1 more exam and I am in year 2!
  2. I am a regular at church, sometimes twice a day if I am strong enough & bible study every week.
  3. I love to get out in the fresh air and walk the Cockapoos. I'll just sometimes sit on a bench and love to watch them run around.
  4. I took a trip to Leeds to visit my best friend :)
  5. There is more energy to spend with friends and family which I always love and enjoy.
  6. We had a LIFE week of 78 events at our church, I was lucky enough to go to alot of the events and meet people and talk to people, that was a fantastic week. I am now going to start to help with one of the courses at church, Christianity Explored.
  7. I love being able to cook and bake more. Having that bit more energy gives me the boost to get my Paleo cookbook out and cook, I made a beef goulash for friends and they made my day "I didn't know healthy food could taste this good" its great to show people we can eat healthily! I have to balance that with baking cakes & brownies (wheat free) which people appreciate just as much.
  8. My piano playing has really improved, its so relaxing, I'm so glad I took it up.
  9. I feel I am becoming more independant. I have always relied on my parents for everything throughout my 10years of this illness, but I am 22 now I need to learn how to depend on myself more.
  10. Mum and Dad went away for 10 days and I stayed at home by myself with my sister (but she works full-time). That was good to know I could look after myself day in day out with everyday stupid things, doing the washing, cooking, looking after two demanding dogs etc. I have never done that before.

It was only 6 months ago I was despairing with life. I didn't have a clue what was happening with my body or where to seek treatment, if I would ever be better, what on earth my future had in store. I was bed bound in a very bad way. I prayed and prayed and God answered my prayers, I stuck to the herbal drops and ploughed on with my healthy eating, pacing, all the things i knew would help and here I am. I feel truly blessed and I know how lucky I am. It shows we can't loose hope, we don't know what is right around the corner. It has been difficult, do I push myself out my comfort zone or do I stay in my safe bubble? At the end of the day, I am surrounded by people who constantly encourage me and help me and I will always remember those people and be grateful, certain people have come into my life at just the right time. However, it is me as an individual who needs to push on and make decisions and have the will to continue to fight it everyday.

Now I am thinking to the future and what my next steps are to continue to move forward.

Lots of love to you all

I thought I would blog about my current treatment protocol because alot of people have been asking lately where I am at with treatment/recovery.

Number One: Cowden Protocol
I am still under Dr Myhill's watch but I haven't had a consultation with her in... about 6 months.
Since we looked into the Lyme Disease, my protocol changed.
I am now on the Cowden Protocol from NutraMedix, a whole combination of different herbal drops. It is designed for Lyme Disease patients but it can help with so many things, it claims to help with most chronic illnesses.
It personally works brilliantly for me, I was briefly on it years and years ago but this was only one product Samento - their best selling product. I am now on the whole protocol, I order so much from them they now know me when I call, thats not good, I obviously call too much.
I am on 12 of their liquid products and 3 different types of capsules most all include:-
Anti-inflammatory
Antiviral
Antibacterial
Antifungal
Antiparasitic

www.nutramedix.ec/ns/lyme-protocol

Number Two - Dr Myhill & Diet
I am still on medication for an under-active thyroid, hypertension, anti-depressants and sleeping pills.

I am trying to stick to Dr Myhill's anti-candida diet. My candida test came back as severe so for me its a diet of:-
No-
Sugar
Wheat/gluten
Dairy
Carbohydrates (including rice & potatoes)
Fruit (due to the high sugar content)
Alcohol (due to the yeast content)

Literally - Meat, fish, protein
Vegetables (as many and as varied as possible)
Water - filtered
All organic as much as I can

All this said, I do have 'off' days. I was saying to someone recently, I did this diet religiously for 3 weeks and I felt so much better but my mood was on the floor. I personally gain more from having 'naughty' days and enjoying those occasional foods than never ever having a glass of wine or a piece of chocolate or a pizza. Thats just my personal preference.

I cannot rate Dr Myhill high enough, she is a fantastic specialist and her knowledge of M.E/CFS (along with other chronic illnesses) is overwhelming. She has helped my recovery immeasurably & I trust her completely with my health.

www.drmyhill.co.uk

Number Three - CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
I only see my CBT psychologist when I desperately need her, so I went in December during my relapse but I feel alot more positive now. Once you have been through CBT I find it so useful to use almost daily, she has taught me tools to use when I find myself in a negative mindset. Small things we can all do.
Write down 3 positive things, it doesn't have to be huge eg. The sun came out - its still a positive thing.

Number Four - The Perrin Technique
I still do The Perrin Technique, I do the drainage twice a day at home then I see my practitioner every month to check in with her and she can do spinal, neck manipulations to allow my toxins to drain efficiently. This technique is designed to rid my body of the excess toxins my body holds onto and to encourage the drainage of the lymphatic system so my body doesn't become to 'toxic' and enflamed.

So far, January has been a good month for me. Alot of people have been asking about returning to my studies - thank you to everyone for asking.

It is a part-time course and the lectures are during the weekends, my first weekend was at the beginning of Jan. To say I was very nervous is an understatement, I wasn't sure if I was going to be well enough to manage and cope with the physical and mental effort it would take.
I was so excited and proud I managed both full days 10-6PM of lectures. It was so fun, I loved being back with like minded people and my mind is a sponge when it comes to nutrition, I am fascinated by it and its healing properties and how it can play a huge part in recovery.
Between study weekends, I have alot of assignments to be doing and revision for an exam in March.

I've generally been feeling better all round, I am reading more because my mental capacity is able to cope more.
My course has boosted me to cook more healthy again and to be focusing on eating the right wholesome foods to aid my personal recovery.
I think everyone in the UK has had some snow this past couple weeks, we got alot. I was well enough to go out with the dogs and throw balls, mess about, had a snowball fight with some of the kids on the estate.

Poppy in her hoody in the snow

My sister, Hannah had a week off work so we were able to get away up to the Lake District and stayed in a Spa hotel we love and have been to alot. We just totally chilled, I went swimming (haven't done in over a year) yeah OK it was two lenghts but its a start!! We got a massage & steam/sauna, ate some good food. I went for a small walk down along the lake next to the hotel, I love to be around nature and in the fresh air.

Hannah                                                 Me

These past two weeks I have had two emotional moments where I am literally very taken aback and I have to take a little time to compose myself. It's a very thankful, grateful time where I thank God of how far I have come recently. I had a very bad relapse in November/December and I lost hope for a while, understandably.
I am proud to say I am a hugely determined & motivated person, I will always fight this illness to be the best I can be, however many times it knocks me down. That cannot be said lightly it's a huge huge challenge.
With the people around me, I have managed to get up and move onto the next chapter... who knows what that will bring for me.

I am very lucky to have a handful of these special people

Keep going little fighters :)

I'm done with New Years Resolutions - I find them too cliche because if something in your life needs changing, change it anytime of the year.

Instead I have set myself a list of goals I would love to achieve in 2013 & some things to be working towards.

I am so excited to be going back to studying. I cannot wait to be in student mode and learning more about nutrition starting January

I want to join a yoga/meditation class

Continue to learn the piano

Drink more Champagne

I would love to do some volunteer work, maybe just one morning/afternoon a week to begin

I have always wanted to visit New York so I am saving for that and perhaps later in the year depending on my health I hope to book a last minute trip. So excited for that, I want to do everything there!!

My best friends have all moved away now to Leeds & London & this year I really want to visit them & see their worlds

Focus on my health has to be my main focus. There is nothing more important that than to me

Continuing to grow as a Christian

Grow my hair long again

Make sure 2013 is better than 2012!!

 Happy New Year people :)
Here's to 2013

Bekz xoxo

I had a great Christmas, finally feeling much better after my 6 weeks of a temporary relapse.

My parents are so hard to buy for, so my sister and I decided to take them out for a meal instead, they both do so much for me all year round.
At the beginning of December we all went to Rosso in Manchester and it was a lovely evening. They had a singer in that night so it was a great atmosphere. My sister & I were slightly heartbroken we were one night too late, the previous night Louis from One Direction had been in but anyway, I was so thankful I was well enough to go! I never take it for granted the stolen times I can go out & enjoy myself.

We had 15 family members at our house this christmas. It was mayhem but fun. It was all my dads side of the family +3 dogs.
We had ALOT of food, fun, 1 fire, lots of Champagne & presents.
I am not sure how I lastest all day & all night, I think it was the numerous glasses of Champagne & chocolate.

I hope you all had a great Christmas.
The next few days are definitely rest days for me, hopefully being able to catch up with friends who are home for a while and eating the mountains of left over food.
Heres to hoping I continue to feel better.
